Broadening The Delivery of Care
The Cultural Competency Movement

In America, safely delivering care doesn’t always mean the same thing. In fact, knowing how to communicate and treat non-English-speaking patients is an important variable in improving care. So "Provider Cultural Competency" has recently moved to the front burner, where Medicare now sponsors cultural competency training for physicians.

Angela Sauaia, MD, led the effort to create a Cultural Competency curriculum for the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She will discuss the effort, and why cultural competency is important now. Jose Reyes, Ed.D., is a national Cultural Competency consultant. Dr. Reyes will discuss how companies nationally are aligning their employee demographics to the patient/client demographics.

Angela Sauaia

Dr. Sauaia has over ten years experience in health outcomes/health services research, including a stint with the Colorado Foundation for Medical Care’s Health Care Quality Improvement Program for Medicare beneficiaries. She joined the Division of Health Care Policy and Research at the University of Colorado in September 2002, and - as PI of the Tepeyac Project, a federally funded project to improve breast cancer screening, since 1999 - is now a nationally recognized expert in breast cancer among Latinas. Serving on the Medicare National Review Panel and the National Hispanic/Latina Task Force of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, she also has been with the Denver Health Medical Center Trauma Center group since 1991.

Jose Reyes

With more than 20 years experience in program development, public health, culturally competent delivery systems, child welfare, and migrant health issues, Dr. Reyes is a widely known consultant on cultural competence and human relations issues. Among his many clients: The Annie E. Casey Foundation, AT&T Employee Assistance Program, The National Football League Security Office, The National Institute of Mental Health Child and Adolescent Service System Program and several nationally known migrant service networks like the Migrant Clinicians Network and Migrant Health Promotion.
